Visit to Roeemount Assisted Living / Memory Care

Isabel and I had a very informative meeting this morning with Peggy Schrodi Community Relations Director at Rosemount.    She not only shared what life is like for Rosemount residents, but told us about her experience with her own mother who suffered from dementia, particularly FTD.   There were so many commonalities with her experiences and what mom is going through, for example, the excessive use of jewelry, the clothes mismatch, the layering of garments, lack of hygiene, etc, etc.    She was also very concerned for her safety at home, specifically wandering outside and "how does she deal with strangers that come to her house" - which is the exact concern Steve alluded to in his blog today.

 

At Rosemount there are 2 communities 1) Assisted Living with 5 levels of care and 2) Memory Care with 5 levels of care.  Athough these communites are under one-roof, they are seperate from each other with no-comingling.   Each has thier own staff of caregivers.    The assisted living residents are free to roam, while, as you can imagine, the memory care residents are  limited in where they can go and do.    The living quarters in Assisted have walk in showers in the room, but the  Memory Care communities have no walk-in shower, and smaller rooms (to limit clutter).   We only toured the Assisted Living bedrooms which were nice.  

 

We found out that there is now a waiting list for the Memory Care and a 5 family waiting list for the Assited Living.

 

To determine which community and what level of care they would recommmend for mom, an evaluation is conducted by a nurse and Peggy.   They will be using a conversational approach to complete an 8 page questionnaire.

 

We have scheduled the evaluation/interview for 9:30 am on Monday.  I will be there with the Rosemount folks and mom.   We need to find a way to broach this visit and a potential move with her as I am sure there will be pushback.   I told Peggy that we crafted a story, based on an actual event of electrical outages at mom's house and that she may have to move because of the condition of the electricty and water - she said she could go along with the story.     We would know the recommendations in a short time following the interview.   Perhaps she can be in Assisted Care with a moderate degree of assistance or in Memory care with more attention but would be more independent than other memory care residents because she is physically in better shape than most.
